Home / Getting to know us / Founding Chairman and Expedition Leader of OCEARCH visits Southside!

6th, 7th, and 8th grade Honors Academy students welcomed Chris Fischer, Founding Chairman and Expedition Leader of OCEARCH, to Duval Charter School at Southside for a presentation on shark conservation and our city’s unique role in the life cycle and data collection of the Great White shark.

Chris shared his experience growing up a sports fisherman and coming to the realization that something needed to be done to help conserve our ocean’s resources for future generations. This led him to educate and increasing conservation efforts for our world’s shark populations and giving today’s scientists’ real data that no one had been able to produce before OCEARCH’s involvement.

The students watched how Chris and his team catch and tag sharks, the impact OCEARCH has had on conservation as a whole and were able to ask him questions that inspired them to continue seeking to be change agents in our world. Our students were excited to get back to the classroom and find Jacksonville’s sharks on the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker both on our school laptops and their mobile devices.

Thank you Chris and OCEARCH for coming to DCSS and we can’t wait to see what your next expedition brings!
